작업을 시작할 때 주로 개인적이고 사소한, 실질적 혹은 감각적인 경험, 즉 스스로의 삶에서 출발하여 작품을 만든다. 그리고 그것들을 내부적인 시선과 철학적인 설명을 통해 이해하거나 변형하여 표현한다. 일상에서 찍었던 사진들과 책을 읽다가 표시해둔 밑줄, 캡쳐 이미지, 끄적거렸던 문구들 모두가 개인적인 기억 속에서 물질적으로 또 관념적으로 남아 있다가 작업의 재료로 사용된다. 이러한 재료들을 만져가면서 공통의 시간안에서 존재하지 않았던 무無의 시간에서부터 이미지를 만든다. 아무것도 없었던 공간에 점 혹은 선이 생겨서 그 공간을 장악하고 공기의 흐름을 바꾸어 놓듯이, 시간에도 점 하나를 찍는것과 같다.
그림을 그리면서 나는 넘치는 기억으로부터 내 스스로를 건져내고 잊고싶지 않은 어딘가 숨어있는 장면들을 각인한다. 글자로 한편의 일기를 쓰고, 사진기로 한장의 사진을 찍듯이, 손가락으로 하나하나 느끼며 천천히 그려간다. 사진이 빛의 기록이라면 그림은 나에게 있어서 선(점선면의 조화)의 기록이고, 비디오는 시간의 기록이다. 이렇듯, 일상 뿐만 아니라 창작, 매체를 통한 작품의 공유, 그리고 전시의 과정 모두가 기록의 대상이 되고, 내가 여기까지 온 원천이자 내가 만들어지는 세계인 '나의 집'을 세운다.
매순간이 그렇듯 이번 전시도 하나의 단락이자 경과이다. 전시의 제목≪ P:ass-age ≫은 시간의 경과 (age), 기나긴 글의 한 장(page), 그리고 '나의 집'으로 들어와 교류를 시작하는 통로(passage) 등을 의미한다. 길게 이어지는 글자가 만들어내는 책 속의 이야기들을 페이진 한 장씩 넘겨가며 머릿속에 떠올리듯이. 문을 열어서 집 안으로 들어가기도 세상 밖으로 나오기도 하고, 전혀 모르는 비밀의 방으로 들어가기도 한다. 봉오리 안에서 웅크려 있다가 활짝 편 후 끝내 가지를 떠나 비행을 하는 나뭇잎처럼, 하얗게 비어있던 종이는 책이 되거나 그림이 되어 펼쳐지고, 누군가의 기억으로 들어가 빛과 그림자를 넘나들며 여행한다.
우리는 눈을 뜨고 귀를 열어 세상과 소통하고, 잠겨있던 문을 열어 손님을 반긴다. 그리고 문을 열고 지나가는 그 순간, 그 장소의 일시적인 체류자가 되고, 찰나의 장면의 주인공 혹은 풍경이 된다. 여행객을 싣고 달리는 기차만큼 빠르게 지나가는 장면들을 멈추어 네모난 기억의 프레임에 담고, 평평한 현재의 벽에 구멍을 내어 문을 달아 통로를 만든다.

The creation I make often takes the departure from intimate and little, actual or sensorial experiences, that is to say my own life. Then I try to transform or to represent them after observation with interior vision and certain philosophical or psychological understandings. Small things of the past such as daily photographs, underlined passages in the book, captured images or instant notes remain in the individual memory and serve as materials for creation. Manipulating these elements, images are conceived from the zero-time (or time zero) which had no existence in the general time world. As a point or a stroke fills out the empty space and dominates the entire flow of the air, I put a point also in the time.
By drawing, I tend to detach myself from overwhelming memories and to intensify the sceneries hidden somewhere from forgetting. Just like writing a journal with letters and taking a photography with a camera, I draw carefully with my hands, feeling each part of the image. If the photography is writings of lights, drawing is, for me, writings of strokes (the whole of dots and lines), and video, those of time. Thus, not only the daily life but the act of creation, the mediation of the work and all process of the exhibition become the material, which allows me to build the ‘home’ where I come from and where I exist.
As is each instant, this exhibition is a step and a piece. The title ≪ P:ass-age ≫ means the crossing of the time (age), a part of written stories (page), and a door by which people enter the ‘home’ to communicate with me (passage). In the same way of turning each page to imagine the written story along the book, we open the door to enter or exit and even to get into the secret chamber. Like the leaf hanging at the edge of the branches until the moment of blossom then flying out, an empty white sheet of paper becomes a specific text or image, which travels around the light and the shadow inside somebody’s memory.
We open the eyes and ears to perceive the world and the doors to receive the visitors. Once passing through the opened door, the passenger makes a temporary life there and becomes a protagonist or a background of this ephemeral landscape. Finally, scenes passing as fast as a running train full of travelers are stopped for a while and contained in a rectangular spatiotemporal frame, the imaginary passage on the wall of the present.
